Capel WI
Our Centenary
2023 was Capel Wl Centennial year
The Centenary Tea Party was held on Saturday June 8th for members, both past and present, and guests.
An army of helpers descended on the hall with china, table clothes, flowers, photos and artefacts for the history table.
The theme was a Lyons Corner House and a few members dressed as Nippies and lived up to their name serving the sandwiches, cakes and drinks to everyone with great enthusiasm. The menu was chosen as similar to those that would have been available 100 years ago.
We thought it would be more significant if there were a more lasting memorial to this great age! After much deliberation a tree was proposed, but as it was too late in the year to be planting trees we decided to wait until the new year.
When liaising with the Parish Council it was suggested we plant a 'twin' to the one planted by the Horticultural Society outside the front of the Memorial Hall two years previously.
We purchased a Sorbus 'Autumn Spire'. This is a slender sort of eye shaped tree growing to approx 15f (5mtr) turning a stunning deep red colour in the Autumn with orange berries (loved by birds).
Our planting took place on a cold wet Tuesday lunchtime. A group of Wl members huddled by to watch a member's husband and our president plant the tree. There was bit of jolly banter, plus a celebration drink kindly bought by another member, no-one fell in the hole .....fortunately!
Another member's husband kindly made a wooden plaque with the years dates inscribed 1923 - 2023 to hang on the tree!
As some celebration trees have not thrived well surrounding the Memorial Hall so we will all keep an eye on it; plus another Wl member has offered to water it during drought weather conditions.
A huge thank you to all involved in this celebration occasion. Brilliant!
